They asked for water and light. They were answered with tear gas and bullets. In nineteen days, a generation with no leader, no party and no fear brought down a regime everyone thought was untouchable. This site exists so that no one forgets what they did, or what it cost them.

Why they rose up
In Antananarivo, power cuts by the state utility Jirama could last up to twenty hours a day. Taps ran dry. Students studied by torchlight while a cable car was being built over the capital.
About three in four Malagasy people live in poverty, and only around a third have access to electricity. The median age is about 20. This country belongs to its young people, and its young people had been left with nothing.
What began as anger over power cuts became a total rejection of corruption, of impunity, and of a president who had first seized power by force in 2009 and had quietly held French citizenship since 2014.
